It’s been a crazy couple weeks. Two weeks ago we got a call on Thursday night that they needed a 15th team in a Colorado competition to make it a qualifier. I made a couple quick calls and on Friday afternoon Myself and Keith were on our way to Telluride Co. 13 hrs later we arrived at our site at 6am in a fully loaded honda element. We then went and explored beautiful Telluride. You couldn’t ask for a better place to BBQ.
We entered night 2 of little to no sleep. Our trusty GMG Jim Bowie held temperature like a champ in the altitude and cold weather. We had a great cook taking 2nd in chicken, 5th in ribs and 4th in brisket, finishing 3rd overall. Then came the 3rd night along with the 13 hr drive home. But it was well worth it meeting all the great Colorado teams.
Rooftop BBQ will be back at Dana Point for its second annual BBQ competition held at Sea Terrace Park, map link below.
Location: Sea Terrace Park
Pacific Coast Highway & Niguel Road
Dana Point, California 92629
We’ll be serving up plates of sausage sandwiches, beans, and coleslaw to the public from noon to 5 p.m. This was an awesome event last year and more than double of the teams will be coming out. It’s going to be a great event!
We had a great time in Mesquite, just got back last night.
We were able to get a call in chicken with 10th place. And just out of the top ten with an eleventh in pork.
Looking forward to getting back out there in Dana Pointe at the end of this month.
It’s that time again! Our third trip out to Mesquite, Nevada for the annual Smokin’ in Mesquite BBQ Competition. If you will be out that way or are looking for something to do over Labor Day weekend, come on out to the Casablanca Resort in the hopping metropolis of Mesquite! We won’t be vending our food but its still got to go somewhere so stop by and see us for some good BBQ eats!
Another great event is the Nugget Rib Cook Off in Reno this weekend… Reno or Mesquite, Nevada is the place to be.
Check back next week and we’ll be posting our results, hoping for some walks but we will settle for the $10,000 grand champion prize.
Since we are still recovering from cooking hundreds of pounds of tri tip, let’s just say the crowd loved our food and we won 8th place in Brisket.
Thanks everyone for sampling our food and to everyone that helped us out.
Rooftop BBQ Competition Team is back from their summer break. But don’t worry, we haven’t been slacking. We had some catering events these past few months and on Fourth of July, we cooked a whole hog for our church! It was epic.

Saturday: Noon to 10:00 p.m.

If you can’t make it to this event, our next southern California BBQ competition is in beautiful Dana Point at the end of September.
We are back from our 8th competition of the year and ready for a break until the annual Mesquite competition over Labor Day weekend. We went out with a bang though, winning a third in pork at the Arizona BBQ Festival. We also sold over 1,000 samples of BBQ while completely selling out of our rub and jam. Here’s some photos from the two day festival.
We sold over 900 pieces of pig candy: bacon grilled with brown sugar and our BBQ rub. It was definitely a hit among the crowd, event staff, and even the security guards and cops!
Even though our local was far from the majority of the booths, our teams rocked it! Thanks to all of you who stopped by for our food and thanks for spreading the word about our pig candy. We couldn’t have done it without you!
Seeing our name on the jumbo-tron was pretty amazing, in addition to the actual winning of the third place trophy!
I must say even after having a relaxing Sunday to recover from the weekend competing in Long Beach, I am still pretty tired and sore. But it was so worth it! Our team sold 2,100 tickets of barbeque… selling a variety of food from tri tip and sausage sandwiches to tastings of pig candy and pulled pork. For most the day, we had two lines each 40 people deep!
Not only did we sell out by 5, after making three trips to the grocery store to keep up with demand (thanks Scott), the team also took home a 8th in chicken and a 4th in ribs, with an overall place of 11th out of the 38 teams.
Thanks to all who stopped by our booth to eat or to chat!
If you are in the Scottsdale area this Saturday, make sure to come out to the Arizona Barbecue Festival. Rooftop Barbeque will be competing in the four meats of chicken, ribs, pork, and brisket on Saturday and then in the Rib Fest on Sunday! Along with competing, we will be serving up tastings to the public with lots of PIG CANDY to go around!
More details on the Arizona Barbecue Festival’s site.
Have plans this Saturday? Rooftop Barbeque will be competing and serving up plates of our delicious BBQ at the West Coast BBQ Classic in Long Beach at the Queen Mary.
Admission is $10. With tasting tickets for $2 each. We will be serving up plates of food, including our infamous tri tip served as a sandwich—price still to be determined.
The Queen Mary
1126 Queens Highway, Long Beach
Hope to see you there!
Happy birthday to our team mate, Kellen Wagoner… the king of tri tip! Wishing you a happy birthday today!
For the first time ever, Rooftop BBQ split into two separate teams. Just for Stagecoach Kellen and Andy competed under Rooftop BBQ while Joe and Keith competed under Basement BBQ (get it??). In addition to the two teams, the girls made up the vending team responsible for serving up the 1,500 tastings to the hungry cowboys and cowgirls.
Basement BBQ (Joe & Keith) collected a 4th in ribs and a 8th in brisket while Rooftop BBQ (Andy & Kellen) won second brisket with a tie for first in ribs (tie breaker went to El Fuego Fiasco). Both teams made it in the top ten winning 3rd and 7th place!
We vended chicken legs, pork, and ribs for the three days of Stagecoach.
Did you come by our booth? Please let us know! See y’all next year!
Things did not look good for the team’s third competition in row. Not only was half the team unable to go, but it was raining. And raining. And windy. But Joe and Andy handled it like champs. Looking back on it, Andy thinks after three in a row, he was able to focus more on what to do. But it all came together in the end. Joe and Andy won Rooftop’s first ever RGC, Reserve Grand Champion (aka second place overall).
Out of the 30 teams, Rooftop won a 3rd in chicken (beating their previous top score of a fifth place just the weekend before), 4th in pork, and 5th in brisket.
In Sam’s opinion, the RGC was the result of her meticulously created parsley boxes.
We always love competing on our home turf… The first annual East v West event was our first ever competition after all. The team won their highest ranking in chicken up to that point: fifth place. Finally a trophy in chicken! Way to go team!
And a big congrats goes to Left Coast Q on finally winning their first Grand Champion after many, many RGCs!
Rooftop was kept pretty busy at the Vegas competition this year. Not only was the team competing but we also had our first ever vendor booth to sell our BBQ sauce and launch our jam and rub. PLUS Andy was asked to cook in a celebrity cook off.
As always, we must thank our sponsors for our two Green Mountain Pellet Grills. Cooking on these smokers helped us gain a 23rd in chicken and a 25th in ribs out of the 111 competitors, finishing 37th overall.
Vending our sauce, rub, and jam wouldn’t have been possible without the help of our 2011 sponsor, Fruita Wood. Thanks Bert!
And of course thanks to each and every one of you that came by our booth, whether you bought our sauce or not, we appreciate you just talking to us. We definitely were surprised at just how well our Jalapeno Peach Jam is performing next to our sauce. We sold almost the same amount of each so reviewers, be ready to get a sample of our jam soon!
If you’re interested in purchasing any of our products, head on over to our store here.
Celebrity Cook Off
Another thanks goes out to Michael McDearman for getting Andy into the Celebrity Cook Off. There were four teams set up, each cook was allowed to bring their own special ingredient (Andy chose Anaheim chilies) and were given 5 pounds of ground beef. Andy was then paired with Jeff Hardy of the The Hardy Boyz and James Storm Even though their team didn’t win, it was so cool to see an actual “as seen on TV” competition with four additional celebrity judges along with Ray Lampe, aka Dr. BBQ, as the host.
Rooftop BBQ will be competing and serving up tastings to the public all three days of the Stagecoach event! You can find us among the BBQ competitors in the Terrace, serving up chicken, ribs, pulled pork, and brisket! So who’s going??
If you are a local fan who has been wanting to try some of delicious eats from Rooftop Barbeque, here’s your chance!
The team will be competing at the Ultimate BBQ Showdown this weekend in Wildomar marking our third year into BBQ!
What is in it for you: we will be vending our ‘que of chicken, ribs, pork, and brisket along with Pig Candy (brown sugar coated bacon); along with a beer/wine garden, music, and a three-day carnival!
- Location: Waite and Mission Trail, near the Elks Lodge in Wildomar.
- Date/Time: April 7 from 10am-6pm
- Entry Fee: $5
The following is an excerpt from an article written on patch.com about the event…
To many grill masters in attendance, the event was serious business.
Wildomar resident Keith Henson, along with Joe Angelone of Menifee, and Andy Allen of Lake Elsinore, competed together Saturday as the Rooftop BBQ Competition Team and Catering.
The men proudly showed off their “iGrill” to anyone interested.
“The recycled 255-gallon propane tank is hooked up to two probes, which continuously send temps to our iPhones,” said Henson, the team’s grill builder. “The grill consists of a reverse flow smoker and the “Guru System” equipped with automatic fans for increased temperatures.”
In addition to high technology, secret recipes also lured visitors to the various grilling stations.

And we’d like to give a large shout out to Kellen Wagoner of Canyon Lake who was accidentally omitted from the article.
